Safety first

If you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, or an outlet, cord, or panel is hot to the touch, turn off the power at the breaker if you can do so safely. If there’s smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 911. If a power line is down, stay away from it and call your utility. Then call us at (701) 513-9012.

Common electrical problems we fix

  • Breaker keeps tripping: usually an overloaded circuit, a failing appliance or motor, a loose connection, or a short. Repeated tripping is a warning, so don’t keep resetting it.
  • Flickering or dimming lights: one fixture usually means a bulb or fixture problem. Lights flickering in several rooms, or dimming when big appliances start, can mean a loose connection in the panel or service.
  • Outlets or switches not working: often a tripped GFCI somewhere upstream (check bathroom, kitchen, garage, and outdoor outlets), a loose connection, or a failed device.
  • GFCI won’t reset or keeps tripping: moisture, a worn-out device, or a ground fault somewhere on the circuit.
  • Part of the house lost power: a failed connection, a breaker problem, or trouble with one leg of your service.
  • Burning smell, buzzing, or warm outlets and panels: stop using it, shut off the circuit, and call.
  • No power to a garage, shop, or outbuilding: damaged feeders from storms, trees, frost, or rodents.
  • Unsafe old or DIY wiring: we find it and make it right.

How we troubleshoot

  • Tell us what happened: call or use Request Service. Let us know when it started and what was running, and send photos if you can.
  • We test, we don’t guess: we trace the problem with proper testing before replacing anything.
  • We explain the fix: you’ll know what we found and what we recommend before the work starts.
  • We repair it to code: built to the 2023 NEC and North Dakota standards.

Electrical problems FAQ

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker trips to protect the wiring. Common causes are too much load on one circuit, a failing appliance or motor, a loose connection, or a short or ground fault. Resetting it once is fine, but if it trips again, stop resetting it and call an electrician.

Why are my lights flickering?

If one light flickers, it is usually the bulb or fixture. If lights flicker or dim across several rooms, or when large appliances start, it can point to a loose connection in the panel or service, which should be checked promptly.

What should I do if I smell burning from an outlet, switch, or panel?

Stop using it and turn off that circuit at the breaker if you can do so safely. If you see smoke, sparks, or flames, get everyone out and call 911. Then call ZAP Industries at (701) 513-9012.

Why did part of my house lose power?

Losing power to part of a home can come from a tripped breaker or GFCI, a failed connection, or a problem with one leg of your electrical service. Check your breakers and GFCI outlets first. If that doesn't fix it, call your utility to rule out an outage, then call us.
